Visa Types and Documents Required

A. For all types of visas following documents are required to be submitted:

a. Signed copy of the print-out of the application form filled at https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/index.html One photograph should be affixed at the specified place on the print-out.

b. Original Passport valid for a minimum of 180 days with at least two blank pages.

c. Copy of city registration (Meldebescheinigung).

d. Two recent colour photographs (size 2 by 2 inches) showing full frontal view of face against a white background to be pasted on the application form. Photographs should not be stapled.

e. Copy of receipt of fee payment.

f. A self-addressed envelope for returning the passport with Indian visa is required to be attached with the documents. Stamp of Euro 4.50 may be affixed on the envelope.

g. Visa/Resident permit copy [for applicants other that German nationals.]

h. Applicants under the age of 18 require copies of their parents’ passports and a birth certificate.

i. If any of the document is in German language, it is mandatory to provide English translation of the same.

1. Tourist Visa: Tourist visa is granted to foreigners who do not have a residence or occupation in India and whose sole purpose of visiting India is sight-seeing, recreation or meeting friends / relatives, attending a short term yoga programme (not exceeding 6 months and not issued with a qualifying diploma / certificate), short duration medical treatment including treatment under Indian systems of medicine. No other purpose/activity is permissible on a Tourist Visa. Maximum continuous stay permissible on this visa is 90 days during each visit. Tourist visa is non-extendible and non-convertible.

Note: A person of Indian origin, who does not possess an OCI card, spouse and children of such person may apply for Entry Visa instead of Tourist Visa since Entry Visa has far fewer restrictions than Tourist Visa. Details of Entry Visa are given at Sl. No. 2

A foreigner coming to India on any type of visa will be allowed to undertake activities permitted under Tourist visa.

Documents required: As mentioned in Para (A) above.

2. Entry visa: Persons of Indian origin holding foreign passport, their spouses and children may apply for Entry visa to visit India. Foreign spouse of an Indian national is also eligible for Entry visa.

In case applicant was an Indian national earlier, proof of renunciation of Indian citizenship in the form of Indian Citizenship Renunciation / Surrender Certificate or a copy of the cancelled Indian passport is required to be attached, else the application will be returned for want of this document.

Holding / acquiring Indian passport or travelling on Indian passport after acquiring foreign citizenship is an offence under Indian Passport Act, 1967

Documents required: In addition to the documents as mentioned in Para (A) above, following documents are also required:

a. Apostilled Marriage Certificate/Birth Certificate establishing the relation of the applicant with the Person of Indian Origin.

b. Surrender Certificate

c. Copy of the cancelled passport in case surrender certificate is not available and the passport has been surrendered earlier.

3. Business Visa: Business visa is given for travelling to India for the purpose of business meetings, technical advice and staff training with companies in India and meetings, sales or exhibiting on behalf of a company outside of India. The applicant must not be visiting India for the business of money lending or for running a petty business or petty trade, or for full time employment in India involving payment of salary in India etc.

Documents required: In addition to the documents as mentioned in Para (A) above, following documents are also required:

a. A letter addressed to the CGI, Munich (in English) from the authorized representative of the employer or sponsoring company in Germany, deputing the applicant for a visit to India for business and for meeting full expenses of the visit.

b. Proof of financial standing and expertise in the field of intended business. Copies of previous business deals, Bill of Lading, Invoices, Proof of previous payments etc.

c. Registration Certification/Proof of registration of the company in Germany.

d. A letter of invitation from the Indian Company on its letterhead (full Indian contact details including email address) indicating the applicant’s full name, applicant’s job title, applicant’s passport details, nature of applicant’s business, purpose of travel, probable duration of stay, duration of visa applied for, places and organizations to be visited as well as a guarantee to meet maintenance expenses.

e. Copy of Registration Certificate of Indian Company under Companies Act or Proof of Registration of the firm with the State Industries Department or the Export Promotion Council concerned. The name of the inviting company on the letterhead must match the Registration Certificate as well as on the application form.

4. Student visa:

Student visa is granted for bonafide students to pursue on-campus, full time courses in a recognized educational institution in India, take part in an academic exchange program btween recognized institutions in India and to persons going to study Yoga, Vedic Culture and Indian systems of dance/ music/ Buddhist studies etc., professors or scholars intending to conduct research work in India and applicants intending to pursue internship in an Indian Company/ Educational Institution/ NGO, Foreign Mission/ Posts and foreign government organizations in India. In case the internship is with a Company, the internee should draw a minimum remuneration of INR 3,60,000 per annum. There will be no minimum salary limit in the case of internship in educational institutions and NGOs. Earnings from internship with Indian Companies/Educational Institutions/NGOs will be subject to the Indian Income Tax regulations.

Documents required: In addition to the documents as mentioned in Para (A) above, following documents are also required:

a. Letter of admission from a recognised Indian educational institution with duration of the course.

b. Invitation letter from the company/organization/agency based in India sponsoring the applicant for the internship programme.

c. A letter from the concerned institute in Germany.

d. Proof of registration of the institute/organisation in India.

e. A letter of financial support from parent/guardian.

f. No objection letter from parents/guardians to study abroad for applicants below 18 years.

g. Applicants under the age of 18 require copies of their parents' passports and a birth certificate.

5. Employment visa:

Employment visa is issued to those who are taking up assignment / employment with companies registered in India.

  • An authenticated copy of the employment contract and proof of registration of the employing organization must be furnished, in addition to documents listed at Sl. No. 3 above, as applicable. The contract must provide for a minimum gross salary of INR 16.25 lakhs per annum or its equivalent.

  • Employment visa is also granted for volunteer / honorary work with registered NGOs in India in which case there is no minimum salary requirement.

Documents required: In addition to the documents as mentioned in Para (A) above, following documents are also required:

a. Employment contract between visa applicant and Indian company with detailed terms & conditions clearly enumerating the liabilities/responsibilities of each party including payment of taxes payable to Government of India. Original copy of Employment Contract between Indian Employer and applicant. Contract is to be signed by both parties on each page. Salary/ remuneration paid in India and in Indian Currency only (more than INR.16.25 lacs per annum) should be clearly mention in the Contract.

b. Proof of registration/Certificate of incorporation of the company/organisation in India.

c. No objection letter from parents/guardians to study abroad for applicants below 18 years.

d. Applicants under the age of 18 require copies of their parents' passports and a birth certificate.

6. Conference visa:

Conference visa is granted to those who are going to India for attending an international conference / seminar/ Workshop in India. For business meetings or board meetings, to discuss business matters of a particular company/organization, a foreigner may obtain Business Visa.

Documents required: In addition to the documents as mentioned in Para (A) above, following documents are also required:

a. Letter of invitation from the Indian organization organizing the Conference/Seminar.

b. Political clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs.

c. Clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

d. Letter from the Institution in Germany which the applicant represents.

e. Proof of registration of the inviting Indian organisation.

7. Journalist visa:

Journalist Visa is issued to journalists and media persons travelling to India on assignment to India, for filing reports, shooting of documentaries, etc. A foreigner who is a journalist by profession will be granted journalist visa irrespective of his purpose of visit. For more information about journalist visa and before applying, kindly send an email at culture.munich@mea.gov.in, giving full details about the purpose of the visit, a synopsis of the project, itinerary and if any permissions from local authorities for the project have already been obtained.

Documents required: In addition to the documents as mentioned in Para (A) above, following documents are also required:

a. Letter from the Employer stating the purpose of travel.

b. Other documents, as advised by Press Officer of the Consulate.

8. Medical and Medical Attendant Visa:

Medical visa is granted to those whose sole purpose intending to visit India for getting medical treatment in India from a recognized medical institution. With effect from November 2015, there is a complete ban on surrogacy procedures in India commissioned by foreigners / NRI couples. No visa is, therefore granted for this purpose.

Attendant/family members of the patient coming to India for medical treatment may be granted Medical Attendant Visa. The validity of Medical Attendant Visa will be same as the Medical Visa of the patient. Upto 2 Medical Attendants or family members of the patients are allowed to accompany the patient for treatment in India.

Documents required: In addition to the documents as mentioned in Para (A) above, following documents are also required:

a. Acceptance letter from NABH/NCH/NCISM accredited Hospital indicating name, passport number of patient & attendants (if any), ailment, brief outline of the treatment, estimated treatment time and cost, to be sent directly to the Consulate.

b. Letter from the Hospital/ Doctor in Germany attesting the requirement for treatment in India.

c. In case of a Minor child, a consent letter signed by both parent is needed. If the minor child is in the sole custody of one parent, a copy of the custody order from the local court is mandatory.

d. Bank Statement with sufficient balance to meet medical expenditure.

e. Letter from the hospital/institution in India confirming the applicant’s admission for medical treatment. 9. Ayush Visa (AY-1) and Ayush Attendant (AY-2) :

Ayush Visa is granted to the foreigners whose sole purpose is to seek treatment through Ayush Systems/ Indian Systems of Medicine like therapeutic care and wellness in a Hospital/ wellness centre accredited and registered with any Government authority concerned or NABH/NCH/NCISM accredited hospitals providing Ayush services.

Fees for Ayush visa (AY1) and Ayush Attendant (AY2) is same as that of Medical and Medical Attendant Visa. The requirement of documents are same as Medical Visa as mentioned in Para 8 above.

10. Transit visa:

A visa valid for 15 days and permitting a stay in India up to 72 hours is issued for transiting through India to another foreign destination. Transit visa must be obtained before departure as visa on arrival facility is only available for selected countries. A person intending to make two entries into India in transit in the course of the same journey may also be granted double entry visa, with each stay in India up to 72 hours. For a stay in India beyond 72 hours, an appropriate visa should be obtained. A Transit visa is not required by a foreigner who does not leave the ship while it halts at an Indian port.

Documents required: In addition to the documents as mentioned in Para (A) above, following documents are also required:

a. Valid travel documents for the country of destination and the countries en route.

b. Evidence of onward travel outside India - confirmed air ticket for onward journey.
