Home › Bilateral Relation in Education  › Cooperation in Education Sector

Indo-German cooperation in the field of education is multi-faceted and growing satisfactorily. There are a number of reputed universities in Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg, the two German states on which this Consulate has consular jurisdiction. Both these states attract a large number of international students, including from India. Some of the world-class research institutions like Max Planck Society, Fraunhofer Institute, Helmholtz Zentrum, Anders & Vielhauer are located in these two states. Similarly, some of the leading and top-ranking research universities, viz., Heidelberg University, Tuebingen University, Wuerzburg University, Stuttgart University, Ludwig Maximillian University, Technical University of Munich, etc. are also situated in these two South German states.

A large number of research and applied sciences universities in Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg have regular students and faculty exchange programmes with Indian universities/institutions. These exchange programmes at faculty level and at Masters, PhD and Post-PhD level are extremely useful in strengthening the scientific and technical knowledge base of scholars and professionals of India and Germany. The German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) plays an important role in broadening university education cooperation with India by funding various research projects and encouraging university cooperation. The Bavaria-India Centre for Business and University Cooperation (BayIND) is also actively involved in broadening cooperation in educational sector. Under an MoU, German state of Bavaria and Indian state of Karnataka have sister-states cooperation.

Several educational institutes in India and Germany have formulated specific modules for some of its degree programmes for study of India or Germany specific studies. For instance, Hof University of Applied Sciences and PSG Institute of Advanced Studies in Coimbatore, India have cooperation for a two-year MBA programme, namely, German-Indian Management Studies for Indian engineering graduates. Similarly, Indo-Bavarian Integrated Bachelor and Master's Programme depicts a unique and innovative approach in Indo-German University cooperation. This course consists of studying Mechanical Engineering at Manipal university at graduate level and do master's at any of the participating Bavarian university of the consortium. Recently, Tuebingen University has implemented an International Research Training Group in the field of Globalized Mediascapes. This Ph.D programme in media and communication will enrol scholars of Tuebingen University, Pune University and Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

At school level, India and Germany have students exchange programme and every year, around 600 students and teachers from nearly 35 schools in Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg visit various Indian schools. Similarly, Indian students and teachers also visit Germany under this exchange programme. This exchange programme is proving to be a good learning experience and an important cultural and educational bridge which enables students and teachers of participating Indian and German schools to cross over and know each other country's culture, society and educational system better.

There is a significant presence of Indian academia, students and research scholars in universities and institutes across South Germany. Around 2,500 Indian students are currently enrolled in different universities in these two states and the number is gradually increasing. A majority of them have been pursuing professional courses at Masters, Ph.D and Post-Ph.D level.
